2007-08 NICEVILLE HS FALL/WINTER SPORTS RECAP
BOYS BASKETBALL FALLS SHORT
Gainesville Clips Comeback As Eagles Stumble 75-71 In 5A Regional Road Final;
Niceville's Record Run and Magical Season Ends In State 'Elite 8' at 25-6
(2/23)
Niceville's 'Comeback Kids' appeared to have yet another miracle finish in the works, falling behind host Gainesville by 34-17 at the half before eventually drawing to within two points with less than a minute to play in the game at the 'Purple Palace' Saturday night.
But the Purple Hurricanes made their pressurized free throws late and were able to hold on for a 75-71 win in the Class 5A Regional Final, ending Niceville's record run to the school's first ever appearance in the Boys 'State Elite Eight' under first season Head Coach Jerome Strutchen. The team finished the season with a best-ever 25-6 record.
Following a cold shooting first half, the Eagles found their range from downtown in the second half, hitting six three point field goals, including three by Ty Friedlund and two by Billy Billings and putting themselves in position to steal a road victory and secure a State Final Four spot. Capping a frantic late run, Niceville drew to within a bucket and trailed Gainesville 66-64 with 49 seconds left to play but the Eagles couldn't complete their comeback as they saw Purple Hurricanes nail seven of their nine free throws down the stretch, including three in the game's final seven seconds.
How The Eagles Got There:
Compiled a stellar 22-5 regular season record, including 12-2 in 1-5A play to secure the regular season district title;
Won the 1-5A District Tournament Crown in a Super Saturday Night win at Pace, 66-53 over Choctaw;
Rolled Past Rutherford 59-51 at the Eagles Gym In 5A Regional Quarterfinal;
Clipped Choctaw For A Fourth Time in '07-'08, Cruising to a 57-49 Win In the 5A Regional Semifinal
It Was A Great '08 For Niceville Eagles Basketball!
